OCD Anonymous (OCDA)
Recovery from Obsessive Compulsive Disorders
OCD Anonymous (OCDA, or Obsessive Compulsive Disorders Anonymous) is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).
OCA Membership
The only requirement for membership is a desire to recover from OCD. There are no dues or fees, we are self-supporting through our own contributions.
OCA Affiliations
OCA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes.
Primary Purpose of OCA
Our primary purpose is to recover from OCD and to help others.
Anonymity in Obsessive Compulsive Anonymous
We choose to remain anonymous at the public level for several good reasons. Anonymity allows us to share our personal stories, knowing that they will remain in the confidence of those who attend our meetings. Anonymity also reinforces that it is the program not the individual, that is responsible for the recovery. We, as a fellowship, have found that together we can get well when separately we could not.
Recovery from our Obsessions and Compulsions
Many of us have spent countless hours 'battling' our obsessions and compulsions, swearing them off forever only to find ourselves right back where we started.
There is a solution! The twelve step program originated by Alcoholics Anonymous has been adapted for help OCD sufferers. Alcoholics are a specific type of OCD sufferer. Alcoholics obsess incessantly about drinking, then are unable stop drinking compulsively. No amount of swearing off can remove the problem of alcoholism. Once they start they are unable to stop by using their own willpower. Many recover through Alcoholics Anonymous' 12 step solution.
Obsessive Compulsives Anonymous (OCA) brings relief to our common dilemma. Most of us have found, that using this program along with our friends in the meetings can reduce or eliminate our obsessions and compulsions.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
OCD is characterised by recurrent, unwanted and unpleasant thoughts (obsessions), and or repetitive, ritualistic behaviors, which the person feels driven to perform (compulsions), people with OCD know their obsessions and compulsions are irrational or excessive, yet find they have little or no control over them.

OCD in New Zealand
Fear of contamination - New Zealand
On 27 July 2010 TVNZ's Mark Sainsbury ran a Close-Up article entitled "Cry for help from parents of OCD son". The article describes the desperation of the sufferer - jumping out a window, and thoughts of suicide and homicide by the parents as a solution. These thoughts are typical of people before they find a suitable 12 step program. OCA may provide relief from these fears.
Obsessions with alcohol and food
Having suffered from a range of OCDs myself I understand the pain described in your Close Up article “Cry for help from parents of OCD son". “Obsessive Compulsive Anonymous" is a free, simple, proven program that your family may find helpful. It is based upon the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, which removed the obsessive compulsive disorder of alcoholism from me.
Obsessive Compulsive Anonymous in New Zealand
There are many 12 step fellowships in New Zealand where people are recovering from OCD every day. This disorder is common to alcoholics, overeaters, gamblers and many other problems with seemingly uncontrollable obsessions and compulsions. However, at the time of writing this page, the author of this site has been unable to find any actual "Obsessive Compulsive Anonymous" meetings in New Zealand. Here are some suggestions if you'd like to help yourself recover from OCD:
- Read the book "Obsessive Compulsive Anonymous", and other literature, CDs, etc
- Contact us that we may use our experience of 12 step groups to set up a local group, and resources, for your recovery.
