Sex Addiction Counselling and Therapy
Counselors and therapists frequently have clients who have enormous struggles with sexual addictions. Many of these clients express that they feel alone in their struggles, and feel that not being alone in their battle against sex and pornography addictions is important to their recovery.
Overcoming the Lone Battle Against Sexual Addictions
Where there are local Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) or Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA) meetings, therapists can refer their clients there for the mutual support they need.
However, where there are not yet local SLAA meetings available, therapists can facilitate the creation of such groups. They can encourage sex addicts in their area to form a local SLAA group for their mutual support and recovery.
Counselors and therapists considering this approach find it valuable to familiarise themselves with SLAA’s Steps and Traditions. This enables the language of 12 Step recovery to further help the client during therapy sessions.
For a more detailed understanding of the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions counselors find AA’s 12 Steps and 12 Traditions book useful. It is available from most AA Meetings, or from the Alcoholics Anonymous Service Centre. PDFs of every chapter in this book are available online by clicking on the links within each of these pages:
Counselors and therapists may also find familiarisation with S-Anon useful when family members are involved.
